Explore the High Alpine Heart of Slovenia on gravel bikes with Discovering Slovenia.

Few cycling experiences rival riding through the quiet valleys and forest roads of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, climbing toward traditional Slovenian mountain huts (koče) surrounded by alpine meadows and rugged peaks. From your base in Luče, it’s possible to reach several of these huts entirely on gravel or mixed-surface roads — perfect for gravel and e-bike riders seeking adventure, nature, and authentic mountain culture.

Here are six unforgettable huts you can cycle to from Luče.

🏡 Dom na Smrekovcu – 1 377 m

Smrekovec Ridge

Perched on the slopes of the volcanic Smrekovec range, Dom na Smrekovcu is a true alpine retreat surrounded by spruce forests and mountain pastures. The hut offers panoramic views toward the Šaleška Valley and Pohorje, along with hearty mountain meals and traditional hospitality.

From Luče, the climb to Smrekovec can be tackled via Ljubno ob Savinji and Ljubenske Rastke — a mix of paved and gravel forest roads. The ascent is steady, with rewarding scenery and a peaceful atmosphere far from main tourist routes.

Approx. distance from Luče: 30–35 km one way.

🏔 Koča na Grohotu – 1 460 m

Grohot Pasture below Raduha

Set below the northern face of Raduha, Koča na Grohotu rests on a wide alpine meadow framed by steep limestone walls. This traditional hut dates back to the mid-20th century and remains a favorite for mountaineers and cyclists alike.

The approach from Luče follows the Solčava valley, climbing gradually toward the Bukovnik farm (the highest farm in Slovenia), then along gravel forest tracks up to the pasture. The final section is steeper, but the peaceful alpine setting — and homemade soups or štruklji at the hut — make it worth every pedal stroke.

Approx. distance from Luče: 25–30 km one way.

🌄 Dom na Menini planini – 1 453 m

Menina Plateau

A ride to Menina Planina offers a classic gravel ascent through deep forests and rolling alpine meadows. Dom na Menini planini sits near the plateau’s high point, Vivodnik (1 508 m), and rewards cyclists with sweeping views across central Slovenia.

You can approach Menina from the Tuhinj or Dreta valleys — both routes offering a mix of paved and gravel forest roads. The final climb to the hut is steady and entirely rideable on a gravel or e-bike.

Approx. distance from Luče: 40–50 km depending on route.

🐄 Mala Planina & Velika Planina – 1 500–1 666 m

Huts: Črnuški dom, Jarški dom & Zeleni Rob
Access: via Volovljek Pass (Kranjski Rak, 1 029 m)

The Big Pasture Plateau (Velika Planina) is a jewel of Slovenia’s highlands — a sea of wooden herdsmen’s huts, open meadows, and wide gravel tracks perfect for cycling.
From Luče (522 m), climb the scenic paved road to Volovljek Pass, then continue on gravel roads that lead up to Mala Planina and Velika Planina.

At Mala Planina, you’ll find Črnuški dom (1 526 m) and Jarški dom (1 523 m) — two welcoming huts offering local dishes and stunning views. Continue across the plateau to Zeleni Rob (1 666 m)* on Velika Planina, the highest point accessible by gravel road, where a cozy mountain lodge serves as the perfect lunch stop.

The entire plateau is rideable by gravel or e-bike, with minimal hike-a-bike sections and endless panoramic views of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

Approx. distance from Luče: 25–30 km one way.

🏞 Koča na Loki – 1 534 m

Mountain: Loka Plateau under Raduha

Nestled on the northern slopes of Raduha, Koča na Loki is one of the most atmospheric huts in the region. It’s surrounded by high pastures, with views stretching across the Upper Savinja Valley.

From Luče, the route climbs steadily on forest and gravel roads — a proper high-mountain ride with sections steep enough to test even seasoned gravel riders. Near the hut, the scenery opens up dramatically, revealing the wild side of the Raduha massif.

Approx. distance from Luče: 15-20 km one way.
