If you love exploring gravel roads and lesser-used farm lanes mixed with alpine scenery, the Kamnik-Savinja region is your playground. Here are five gravel cycling routes that give you demanding climbs, wild backroads, and a taste of Slovenia’s quieter side.

1) Krnica – Lenart – Speh

Distance: 48.7 km Elevation Gain: 1,880 m – Route on Strava

A compact but punchy route. With almost 1,900 m of climbing in under 50 km, expect steep gradients, forest gravel climbs, and tight descents. Perfect for when you want maximum effort in a shorter ride.

2) Krnica – Bočna – Menina Planina – Speh

Distance: 90.28 km Elevation Gain: 3,025 m – Route on Strava
This loop pushes deep into the hills. Expect long gravel ascents (Menina, Bočna segments) and persistent climbing. One for days when you want to test endurance and relish long, grinding climbs.

3) Ljubno – Dom na Smrekovcu – Podolševa – Solčava

Distance: 72.01 km Elevation Gain: 2,274 m – Route on Strava

Rolling and rugged, this route mixes mid-altitude climbs with forest tracks and scenic high valleys. It’s a good balance between strain and enjoyment — you'll feel like you've escaped the crowds.

4) Krnica – Ljubno – Konjski Vrh – Koča na Loki

Distance: 57.73 km Elevation Gain: 2,280 m – Route on Strava

A steep little beast. Many sustained climbs in a relatively short loop make this ideal for riders who want serious ascent without a day-long commitment.

5) Gruhot – Panoramska Cesta – Matkov Kot – Logarska Dolina

Distance: 78.17 km Elevation Gain: 1,855 m – Route on Strava

A gentler option compared to the others, but still solid. This route shines in variety — scenic panoramas, ridge roads, and a lovely descent into Logarska Dolina, the prettiest valley in Slovenia.

✅ Tips & Ideas for Gravel Riding

Gearing: Use a wide-range setup—something that lets you spin comfortably uphill.

Tire pressure: Lower pressures help grip loose gravel, but avoid going too soft on descents.

Nutrition & hydration: Some stretches are remote—carry extra.

Check route surfaces: Gravel, dirt, forest roads, and possibly a few paved connectors; conditions change with weather.

Start early: Especially for the longer/higher routes; midday heat or storms can affect the high parts.
