There’s nothing quite like jumping into a cold Alpine river after a day hiking or cycling in the mountains.
Here in Luče, in Slovenia’s Upper Savinja Valley, we have several beautiful places to swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Savinja River — all within walking distance of the village.
From a newly rebuilt weir beneath the slopes of Raduha to quiet pebble beaches and natural pools, these are three of our favourite places for open water and wild swimming in Slovenia.
And yes — the water is usually pretty refreshing!
1. The New Jez – Swimming Beneath Raduha
The newest swimming spot in Luče might also be the most spectacular.
Following the floods that caused extensive damage in the Upper Savinja Valley, the old structure here was replaced with a completely new jez — the Slovenian word for a weir.
Rather than simply rebuilding what was there before, the new structure creates a series of cascading sections in the Savinja River, with pools and places to sit beside the water.
And the setting is difficult to beat.
Look upstream and Raduha rises above the river, with forest covering the valley sides in almost every direction. On a warm summer day, it has quickly become a fantastic place to cool off, sit beside the water and enjoy the mountains.
It's also only a few minutes' walk from the centre of Luče — and around 15 minutes walk from our accommodation at Discovering Slovenia.
2. The Savinja and Lučnica Confluence
A little farther through the village is another of our favourite places to get into the water.
Just below where the Lučnica joins the Savinja, the river curves around a meander and creates a small beach area with natural pools.
It's a lovely place to spend a hot afternoon: find a spot beside the river, cool off in one of the pools and enjoy being surrounded by the mountains and forest of the Upper Savinja Valley.
It's less about swimming long distances and more about wild swimming, dipping and relaxing beside the river — which, frankly, is often exactly what you want after spending several hours in the mountains.
3. The Pebble Beach and Rock Slab
Downstream from the new jez is a completely different little section of the Savinja.
Here the river bends beneath a rock face, with a pebbly beach on one side and a broad rock slab beside the water.
When river conditions allow, you can wade across, stretch out on the warm rock and cool off in the river. It's another simple, beautiful place that you could easily walk past without realising what a good swimming spot it is.
For us, that's part of the appeal of Luče. You don't necessarily need to drive somewhere or plan a full day out — sometimes you can just grab a towel and walk down to the river.
Wild Swimming in the Savinja River
The Savinja is an Alpine river, so even in summer expect cold water.
Conditions can also change significantly depending on rainfall and river levels. These are natural river swimming locations rather than supervised swimming pools, so always assess the conditions before getting in, be particularly cautious after heavy rain, and don't jump into water unless you know the depth and what's underneath.
More Than Just Hiking and Cycling
Luče is best known as a base for exploring the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, with incredible hiking, road cycling, gravel riding and mountain biking straight from the village.
But summer here isn't only about spending all day climbing mountains.
A morning ride followed by an afternoon beside the Savinja — or a cold swim after a long hike — is one of our favourite ways to spend a summer day.
And with these three swimming spots right here in Luče, you don't have to travel anywhere to do it.
